Associate in Applied Science Degree in  Realtime Reporting-CART 

Program Description:

Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) providers use realtime machine shorthand and computer technology to provide instantaneous conversion of speech into written text for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. CART providers also work with people who are learning English
as a second language and high school and college students who are hearing impaired. CART providers may  company deaf and hard-of-hearing clients to conventions, business meetings, doctor appointments, workshops, and wherever communication access is needed. Employment opportunities in this field are abundant nationwide.

The program is approved by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA). GateWay Community College is the only community college in Arizona to offer this specialized training. GateWay offers excellent instruction in realtime machine shorthand and has a state-of-the-art technological facility.

Program Requirements:

  1. Students shall write a five-minute, 180 wpm literary test with 1.4 syllabic density at 97 percent accuracy. This is a requirement of RTR206AA.
  2. Students shall prepare a captioned translation of one hour of captioning services for course evaluation taken from the internship experience.
  3. Students shall complete at least 40 verified hours of actual writing time during internship. This is a requirement of RTR241.

Program Prerequisites:

  1. High school graduation transcript.
  2. Keyboarding at 45 words per minute.
  3. English 101 eligibility.
